TruffleRuby originated as an internship endeavor at Oracle Labs in 2013. This Ruby language interpreter operates on the Java Virtual Machine, leveraging Graal's dynamic compilation and the Truffle abstract syntax tree framework. It delivers substantially higher peak performance than JRuby while maintaining a more streamlined architecture. The project transitioned to open source in 2014, initially merging with JRuby before becoming independent in 2017, and currently functions as a component of GraalVM. My doctoral dissertation centered on this work, and since 2019, Shopify has provided development funding.
